Towing Guide

Your vehicle's maximum towing capacity must account for more than just the RV — it includes passengers, accessories, fluids, and cargo.

To keep the arithmetic simple, this guide applies an estimated cargo allowance: 1,000 lbs for RVs exceeding 8,000 lbs, 750 lbs for lighter models, and 500 lbs for the smallest units.

The terms, defined

GVWR — Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The maximum allowable weight as determined by the manufacturer.

GVW — Gross Vehicle Weight

The actual total weight at any given time.

Dry Weight

The weight of the RV leaving the factory, without cargo or fluids.

Payload Capacity

The maximum safe weight a truck can carry.

Tongue Weight

The downward force a trailer applies to the hitch.

Pin Weight

The force exerted by a fifth wheel trailer on the towing vehicle.

Maximum Towing Capacity

The safe towing limit as set out in the manufacturer's specifications.

Always verify your exact towing capacity with your vehicle's manufacturer before purchasing or towing an RV. You are responsible for using the proper equipment and operating your vehicle safely.
